Hichilema entered politics in 2006 as an economist and outsider, promising to restore Zambia’s institutions, protect the media and end political interference in the state. He lost five presidential elections before winning in 2021, and in between he was arrested repeatedly and his rallies were blocked under the Public Order Act.
