What we collect, and what we do not

Kontext Media Initiative Uganda Limited runs this site. This notice says what happens to information about you when you use it, write to us, or appear in something we publish.

When you read the site

Our web host records standard server logs — your IP address, the page requested, the time, and your browser’s user-agent string. These are kept and used to keep the site running and to investigate abuse.

We do not use advertising or tracking cookies on this site. WordPress sets a cookie only if you leave a comment or sign in.

Video embedded from other platforms

Our episodes are hosted on YouTube and TikTok. On this site they do not play until you press play: each episode shows a still image and a play button, and the video player is only loaded into the page when you ask for it. Until then YouTube has had no player request from you at all.

Two things are worth stating precisely. The still images themselves are served by YouTube’s image service, so it does see the request for those pictures when the page loads — it receives your IP address, but no cookies and no record of which page you were on. And once you do press play, the player is loaded from youtube-nocookie.com, which does not set advertising cookies for viewing; from that point YouTube sees your visit under its own privacy policy and not ours, and if you are signed in to YouTube it can connect the visit to your account.

Typefaces on this site are served from our own server, not from a font provider, so no request about your visit goes to a third party for them.

When you write to us or fill in a form

Studio bookings, Academy applications, job applications and general enquiries reach us by email or through a form. We keep what you send so we can answer it and, where it becomes a booking, a course place or a job, for as long as the relationship and our records require: enquiries, 12 months · bookings, 7 years · unsuccessful job applications, 6 months · speculative applications, 6 months.

We do not sell your details, and we do not add you to a mailing list because you wrote to us about something else.

Journalism

Some of what we hold is material gathered for reporting: notes, recordings, documents and contact details of sources and subjects. We process it for journalism, and the rights below apply to it differently — a request to erase information cannot be used to stop a story that is in the public interest. Our commitments to sources are set out in our editorial standards.

If you were filmed in our studio or appear in something we published and you want to raise a concern, write to info@kontextmedia.africa and a person will answer you.

Your rights

Under Uganda’s Data Protection and Privacy Act 2019 you can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, and object to how we are using it. Write to info@kontextmedia.africa and we will answer within 10 days. If you are not satisfied you can complain to the Personal Data Protection Office.

Where your information goes

We use Namecheap Hosting Services, which means information about you may be stored abroad. We use them under their standard terms and do not give them permission to use your information for their own purposes.

Changes

When this notice changes we update the version and date at the top and keep the previous version available on request.
